They quote early Carnap, before he rejected verificationism and moved on to his confirmation-theoretic approach to science. Interestingly, the descendants of logical positivists in their most empiricist form are anti-realists like Bas Van Fraassen, not realists that would claim that science is real. Scientism is probably the more appropriate label for a good deal of popular science, though that term is too often co-opted by anti-enlightenment loonarooos.
